What’s My Learning Style

I am an active learner that allows little or no class time for discussion or problem-solving activities. To help myself with the teaching in the classroom, basically I will be creating group activities in my class to work on special projects in the classroom. Also I am a sensing learner. Basically, I tend to be patient with my students and good at memorizing facts and doing hands-on activities with my students in the classroom. I like to give lots of examples while I am teaching the class.

I am a visual learner, which allows me to draw diagrams, sketches, flow charts, or any other visual representation of course material that is predominantly verbal. I use lots of color-coding in my classroom for all my six classes that I teach already.  In teaching Math for the first year, I have discovered that I am more of a sequential learner. As a sequential learner, I use lots of steps by steps to solve the problems that I teach in the class.

  1. Hi Laura,
I enjoyed reading your post. It's great to see that you're developing a variety of methods to teach students who have different learning styles.

In teaching math, I'm sure that being a sequential learner and teacher will be beneficial. There were many years that I had math teachers who failed to explain what was being taught. I thought they believed that everyone should understand the concepts in the same way. I blame their lack of diverse teaching skills for my negative relationship towards all things math related. It is so important to use and explain the steps to help students who are more comfortable learning this way. It also helps them to understand how following each step is important when solving a problem in order to achieve accurate results.

Keep up the good work. :)

  2. Laurene,
I really enjoyed reading your post. I think that it is so important for students to learn math using group activities. This helps them learn from each other and keeps them engaged. I remember having many math teachers where we just listen to them lecture with very little interaction. It is also great that you are able to explain the step by step process to your students. I feel that this is very beneficial to your students, especially in math. It is also important to relate the math to what students already know for the global learners.
